Remembrance: Northern Ireland could learn to confront dark events as Germany did after Nazi regime

Trevor Ringland - DebateNI
Belfast Telegraph

Over these days of remembrance, many of us will have taken the opportunity to mark the sacrifice of our war dead and injured in two world wars and a succession of conflicts since.

We remember thoughtfully and sombrely, because so many young lives were lost.  They are known as ‘our glorious dead’, but, perhaps more appropriately, they are our tragic dead too.
Conflict is often what happens when politics fails.  Even the Second World War, which most historians now agree was unavoidable, took place after British politicians tried every diplomatic route to avoid war, but found them all blocked.  The mistake, by Neville Chamberlain and others, was not to challenge Hitler early enough and to allow the conditions for the conflagration which followed.
The island of Ireland, north and south, made considerable sacrifices during both world wars.  Tens of thousands of young men from this island died in France, Belgium and elsewhere during the First World War.  They included members of the 36 (Ulster) Division, as well as the 10 and 16 (Irish) Divisions.
During the Second World War, death and destruction came to Northern Ireland itself, with Belfast bearing the brunt of attacks by German bombers.
Remembrance Day: 'We remember thoughtfully and sombrely, because so many young lives were lost'
We remember too soldiers from Northern Ireland killed in more recent conflicts, like Captain David Patton from Coleraine and Corporal Channing Day from Hillsborough, both of whom died in Afghanistan.  We also remember over 1,000 servicemen and women, including police, killed during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
The season of remembrance is a timely reminder of how important it is to work tirelessly to avoid conflict, wherever possible.  It also offers lessons when it comes to facing up to mistakes which happened in the past.
Germany is a great example of a society which has confronted its demons successfully and admitted how extreme ideology fed murder and violence.  It has commemorated the victims of Nazism in a sincere, humble and appropriate manner.
The outcome is that Germany is a successful, prosperous country, which has learned from its violent past.  If only Northern Ireland could follow this example even to a limited extent, confronting dark events from a much different, less extensive conflict, our community would be in a better place to move on.
Remembrance Day is enormously important and, in Northern Ireland, being reminded of the horrors of war should reinvigorate efforts to build a shared and stable society

Equal Right for all? When police are punished differently

What sentence is given to a police officer, who is responsible for the death of a person due to smoke inhalation in a detox cell? Answer: A 10,800 euros fine. And what does the police officer get, who snuck into a VIP-Lounge and ate a buffet there? A year and six months of suspension, if State persecution had its way. How can this be?
Since we began with this column, we have dealt with a whole series of cases, in which police officers  have apparently screwed things up on duty. Sometimes even so badly that people were seriously injured, humiliated and even killed. It is thus important to document these cases. Not to pick on police officers, but rather because the rule of law depends on citizens being able to trust the force, onto whom they assign a power monopoly.

The biggest difficulty in doing so is however finding these cases at all. Indeed, the fact that everyone now carries around a video camera on their phone, has provided more attention for police violence. But it still happens much too often, that law suits due to 'assault in office' against officers are dropped. The professor of criminal law Tobias Singelnstein has found out that only 3% of cases come to prosecution - that means that 97% of law suits are abandoned.
'It is an eye-catching number. The abandonment rate is extremely high', the expert explained to me over the phone. 'In such law suits it only comes very rarely to a persecution.' Indeed, the police unions argue, that it always to down to unjustified complaints against police officers- but that alone doesn't explain this number. "The problem is the process, as often it one persons words against another's, and police officers rarely speak out against their colleagues."
A further problem is that the witness states of police officers enjoy generally enjoy higher regard from state persecutors and lawyers than other witnesses. But even if a lawyer doubts police officer's statement, he must muster considerable courage to bring such a law suit to court: Firstly it automatically means more work and secondly with such a law suit you make yourself unpopular with the authorities. "The numbers speak for themselves," syas Singelnstein. "The state persecutors are definitely cautious to bring an action against police officers.
But even when to comes to a fair complaint, the outcomes for the victim or their family are often everything other than satisfactory.

KIFFENDE MUTTIS: 'Stoned moms'

If you can persuade mums to consume pot, then you have accomplished something big- this is the plan the cannabis industry, legal in some US States. The nation's mothers should be made to exchange their wine-glass for a joint.
We travelled, together with mother of two Jessica Roake, to Denver, to take part in one of her tailored marijuana tours. Of course in the name of market research a lot is smoked along the way.

Problem zwei:

Artensterben

Over 40 000 animal species on the red list of the world nature protection organisation (IUCN). The populations of every fourth mammal – as well as every eighth of bird and every third amphibian have dropped dramatically.

In 2007 IUCN placed western Gorillas on the list. Which are, along with other animals, highly endangered as they are hunted by poachers who sell their meat. The Orang-utan also struggles for survival, its habitat of Borneo and Sumatra dwindling, because the rainforest is being cleared. Coral is likewise on the list, as well as vultures. Drugs and pesticides are, among other things, their undoing, food supplies are also scarce, since there are fewer roaming herds.

Zwölf Prozent aller Vogelarten sind gefährdet
Twelve percent of all bird species are endangered

Currently standing at 1227, 12% of all bird species are on the red list. Newly added to it are an Ethiopian Lark, a Galapagos Finch and a Hummingbird from Columbia. 192 species are acutely endangered of being extinct.

In Europe a fifth of reptiles and near to a quarter of amphibians are currently endanger of extinction. That means that these species are even more highly endangered than mammals (15%) or birds (13%).

Eingeschleppte Arten bedrohen heimische Fauna
Foreign species endanger native fauna

In addition to agriculture, food shortages and climate change, foreign species also supplant the native animals. Ecosystems, of the likes of those in Australia, which have been for a long time isolated, are now reacting sensitively to the introduction of foreign species. Flightless birds, which have had no predators on the island, cannot defend themselves against predators like rats.

In Germany there is around 1150 foreign animals according to the environmental foundation WWF- and 12 000 plant species. As a basis on which to reference from the year 1492 was taken, in which Christopher Columbus discovered America. As since this time the continents have been brought together through seafaring.

Problem eins:

This year the fate of earth is decided in Denmark. At the world climate conference in Copenhagen in December a new global deal is agreed, which replaces the outgoing 2012 Kyoto Protocol. Politicians will discuss measures to reduce green house emissions.

Even if man immediately produced no more green house gases at all, average temperatures will rise by 0.9 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. As the atmosphere reacts in delay to changes. If the emissions further increase however, a rise of up to 6.4 degrees is actually calculated, warns the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC). And in that cases predicts a sea level rise of over half a metre by 2100. The Greenland ice-sheet could completely disappear.

Folgen sind bereits in Deutschland spürbar
The results are already noticeable in Germany

The dooms day scenarios take no end: The IPCC warns of droughts, forest fires and water shortages. 40% of all species are threatened with extinction through global warming, 30% of all wetlands could be lost. In the past century temperatures have already risen by 0.7 degrees overall. The same applies for sea-levels: They have risen collectively by around 3 millimetres every year since 1993.

That the results of global warming are already to be observed in Germany, stresses Stefan Rahmstorf, climate researcher at Potsdam University. "It is only very bad for us because we built towns here, where up to now coastlines have been."  Climate expert, Hermann Ott, adds that towns like Rostock and Kiel, which are by the sea, will be inhabitable long term.

Nachfolgeprotokoll soll Erderwärmung bremsen
The follow-up to the Protocol should slow down global warming

In the so-called Kyoto Protocol of 1993 industrial nations agreed to reduce the emissions of the green house gas carbon dioxide (CO2). In the period from 2008 to 2012 the nations committed to lowering green house gases by average of 5.2%. The EU promised a reduction in emissions of 8%, Germany wanting even to reach the ambitious aim of 21%. The aim of the follow-up of the protocol should now above all be to prevent the dangerous rising of global temperatures by two degrees. To do this global CO2 production must be halved by 2020.

Thema Umwelt

Die Weltbevölkerung wächst, Umweltprobleme verschärfen sich. Wissenschaftler haben die dringlichsten davon identifiziert.

The world population grows, environmental problems worsen. Scientists have identified the most pressing ones.

Raw materials become scarce, the environment is polluted, unique ecosystems disappear. It depends on very many factors, like how people the earth can ultimately bear, without it becoming inhabitable. At present around 6 786 610 000 people populate the planet according to the German foundation for world population. Roughly 81 million are added to it per year- approximately the population of Germany.

Juni statt.

Whether this growing number of people on earth can survive, depends on the future use of resources and on on our exploitation of the planet. The UN environmental committee Unep coined the World Environment day 30 years ago, to create awareness for the vulnerability of earth. Ever since it has been held on the 5th July every year.

A comprehensive report of the OECD in the past year has identified the four most pressing environmental problems of the next year. In addition to climate change, loss of biodiversity and water scarcity, health problems for people will above all take their toll, arising through environmental pollution and poisonous chemicals.

A shout out to new A2 German Students

Are you starting A2 German with the exam board AQA?

This year I will be using this blog as a means to revise for my A2 German work. I found posting up work, including translations and essays, really helped me at AS so I am keen to give it a try again. If there is anyone reading this who would like to contribute or help me please do not hesitate to leave a message!

On a particularly Northern Irish note: Queens University Belfast now offers an International Management course combined with German- this course is very new, it is just the kind of course that I am looking for, using and building on my German skills while it not just being the pure pure German - making it more 'appliable' i.e. useful.

Blitznachricht

Queen Elizabeth II.: Bitte recht freundlich!

Here's a photo, a fast Selfie with Queen Elizabeth II: Wherever the British monarch appears, she looks into a sea of mobile phones. And that apparently doesn't sit well with the 88 year-old at all.

London- Queen Elizabeth II is "not amused", according to a diplomat, that she has to wave to countless camera phones during most of her public appearances. She misses the face-to-face interaction, so the British Queen is said to said to the US-Ambassador in Great Britain, Matthew Barzun. At least so was told to the British "Tatler" magazine by the diplomat.

The 88-year-old therefore finds it strange to see nothing other than the backs of mobiles. Attendants of the royal house have already reported in the past year, the Queen was filmed during a visit to the newly designed BBC broadcasting house the whole time - by members of the BBC with smartphones. The monarch perceived this as poor behavior. Musicians have also complained that they are constantly looked at by phones instead of faces during appearances.

Elizabeth II didn't seem always to be annoyed if photographed with phone cameras. In July she cared for the headlines, when she appeared in the selfie of two Australian hockey players. In the picture's background the Queen smiled amused into the camera.
