Firms plan to serve a taste of Northern Ireland to the Germans

The European superpower's food market is worth €236bn and an EU-funded scheme is helping local companies to a slice of the pie, writes Clare Weir.

Curry sauce from Strabane and onion rings from Cookstown could be finding their way on to the plates of diners in Berlin and Munich as part of a new move into the multi-billion euro German food market.

The programme has brought together the Northern Ireland Food & Drink Association (NIFDA), the Irish Exporter's Association and Scotland Food & Drink.Four Northern Ireland food companies – Elliott's Tradition of Portadown, Dragon Brand Foods from Strabane, Echlinville Distillery, and Rainbow Foods of Cookstown– have joined five other companies from the border regions of Ireland and Scotland as part of an EU-funded export programme, Access 6.

The scheme aims to increase export sales by £19m across 90 regional food and drink manufacturers over the next three years and hopes to create an additional 90 new jobs within the participating businesses, and up-skill a further 400 small and medium businesses across the regions.

Green Seed Germany, an international food marketing consultancy, will act as official mentor to the companies within the German cluster.

Over the next 18 months, Green Seed's team will work in close partnership with the firms to assess, advise and prepare them for the launch of their brands to Germany's diverse retail and food service sector which is worth around €236bn (£195bn) in sales alone.

The four Northern Ireland companies will embark on a range of audits, training modules and study tours, led by Green Seed, and will meet with retailers and food service providers, with the long term goal of securing product listings.

Additional clusters will also be established to target export markets in France, the Benelux, UK, Scandinavia and North America, offering further opportunities to other small and medium sized food and drink companies across Access 6's focus regions.

Speaking at the launch event – which coincided with a major food trade exhibition hosted by the British Embassy – Harry Hamilton, the Northern Ireland project manager for Access 6 said that each of the companies will be equipped with the knowledge, tools and confidence to capitalise on this expanding market.

"As Europe's largest market, with 82m consumers and growth of 3% in 2012 alone, the opportunities for exporting some of Northern Ireland's great food and drink products to Germany are exceptional," he said.

Nicole Gunther, senior consultant of Green Seed Germany, added: "The timing is good for this project as the German market has in recent years opened to new, innovative and international companies and products.

"In parallel, the food retail trade has shown an increase in gourmet food and drink categories with a polarisation resulting in growth at the premium end of the market and at the value-line lower end. In total, about a third of food and drink consumed in Germany is imported."

So, who are the companies hoping to make diners drop their bratwurst and sauerkraut?

One of the firms taking part in the programme is Rainbow Foods.

Based on the shores of Lough Neagh, near Cookstown, the core business is producing foods like battered onion rings, baked and roast potatoes and battered sausages.

Originally it focused on fish processing, which they exported to Switzerland, France and Germany, however after the collapse of the fishing industry in 1990s the company then looked at other ways of utilising the premises, and specifically the breading and battering line.

They then developed a new product for the food service market with their onion rings.

This product has since established a strong presence in the frozen food market and is supplied to major catering outlets in both Northern Ireland and the Republic.

A whole natural onion ring is used, as opposed to a reformed product used by many of the firm's competitors.

The company is planning to export its products into both the retail and food service markets in Germany and is looking at opportunities to broaden their offering by going back to their roots and potentially exporting fresh water fish from Lough Neagh.

Another company targeting the German market is family firm Elliott's Tradition, which started out as a butchery 30 years ago.

Elliott's Tradition now makes burgers and sausage products, predominantly for the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland food service markets.

The firm also makes pies and sauces.

Jeffrey Elliott from the company said: "Germany is a key European market for meat products and we would be interested in seeing what it holds in terms of export opportunities.

"We joined the Access 6 Programme with the view of growing the business and looking at expanding onto the Continent," he added.

Earlier this year, Echlinville Distillery, based in Kircubbin, was granted the first licence to distil spirits in Northern Ireland in over 130 years.

The man behind the company, Shane Braniff from Ards, launched the successful Feckin Irish Whiskey brand in 2005, which has been a huge hit in the USA – not least because of its quirky name and labelling.

The company is now planning a range of drinks which can be sold almost immediately – without having to wait the three years for whiskey to mature – and to develop a premium and super premium malt whiskey.

Finally, another family-run firm with just three employees, Dragon Brand Foods, run by the McGuigan family of Strabane, is hoping that its curry and pepper sauces, as well as its gravy, will tickle the tastebuds of German gourmands.

Supporting companies to fulfill their cross-border export potential

ACCESS 6 is funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the INTERREG IVA programme.

he INTERREG IVA Programme, funded under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) aims to address the economic and social problems which result from the existence of borders. It has two distinct priority measures to create co-operation for a more prosperous and sustainable cross-border region.

It is part of the Special EU Programmes Body, a north/south implementation body sponsored by the Department of Finance and Personnel in Northern Ireland and the Department of Finance in Ireland. It is responsible for managing two EU structural funds programmes, PEACE III and INTERREG IV, designed to enhance cross-border co-operation, promote reconciliation and create a peaceful society.

A sector which is set to take bite out of economy

JUST days ago, it was predicted that the agri-food sector is set to be one of the top performing industries in 2014.

Danske Bank said that the sector will grow by about 3.8% this year, as global export opportunities swell on the back of an increasing world population as well as an expanding middle class population. Last year the Agri-food Strategy Board published Going for Growth: Investing in Success, which includes plans to create 15,000 new jobs, a 15% increase on the 100,000 which work in it currently, by 2020.

In addition, it believes a 60% growth in sales to £7bn is possible including 75% growth in sales outside Northern Ireland to £4.5bn, as well as the formation of a single marketing organisation to drive sales abroad faster; and a much sharper focus and co-ordination of development and delivery of skills and support for innovation.

The programmes operate within a clearly defined area including Northern Ireland, the Border Region of Ireland and Western Scotland.

Daphne Guiness is an old hand in the fashion business. The multi-million dollar 'bier-heiress' (yes, exactly) can be confidently described as a muse, she was and is still the best customer and friends of the late designer Alexander McQueen, a willing guinea-pig to many avant garde designers like Gareth Pugh or Iris Van Herpen, partner-in-crime of photographer Nick Knight. It is apparently not enough for Daphne, to live out her proverbially insinuating fantasies at extravagant events and in fashion-clips . After a rather way-out career as a model, performance artist and designer, the 46-year old Irish woman has now discovered music for herself- and has released the first single together with a video from her debut album (to be available by mid-September). 

Eigentlich braucht man über dieses erste Machwerk keine weiteren Worte verlieren, stürzt sich Guinness damit doch wie eine intergalaktische Harpyie auf die Pop-Krone Lady Gagas. Die von Tony Visconti produzierten Klänge erinnern nicht ohne Grund an seinen früheren Schützling David Bowie: Visuell orientiert sich der von David LaChapelle durchkomponierte Clip am unerträglich-unsäglichen Schundfilm Flash Gordon von 1980 – ein hyperschwuler Traum also.

You don't actually need to lose any further words over this first sorry effort, Guinness pounces on Lady Gaga's pop-crown but like an intergalactic Harpy. The sounds produced by Tony Visconti are evocative of his earlier protégé David Bowie, not without reason, as the film composed by David LaChapelle is based on the unbearable-inexpressibly shoddy film Flash Gordon from 1980 - so an extremely camp dream.

Hier verschmelzen Mode, Musik und Kunst zu einer herrlichen Kitschorgie, zur Bühne für das Modealien Daphne Guinness und ihr beeindruckendes Archiv aus Haute Couture. Die Roben und wohl auch die eingängige, keinesfalls laienhafte Musik retten das Ding aus dem All letztlich vor der Trash-Falle. Dazu nämlich, das bewies erst kürzlich Brooke Candy mit "Opulence", braucht es eine Menge Stil – und wer hat, der kann. In diesem Sinne heben wir einen auf Daphnes Sangeskunst und freuen uns auf das anstehende Album. Cheers!

Here fashion, music and art fuses into a glorious cheesefest, into a stage for Daphne Guinness and her impressive archive of Haute Couture. The dresses and probably the, by no means amateurish, music rescue the it from space, if not the trash trap. The task, as proved by Brooke Candy recently with 'Opulance', needs a lot of style - who has it, can. In this sense, we rise to Daphne's singing talents and look forward to the upcoming album. The growing willingness to ship weapons to Iraq. Vice-chancellor Gabriel warns, Germany cannot be oblivious to this genocide. The German government would support an international UN-mission, according to the information obtained by the SPIEGEL. 

Berlin - SPD-Chef Sigmar Gabriel hat sich offen für Waffenlieferungen in den Irak gezeigt. "Wir können nicht zusehen, wie bis an die Zähne bewaffnete Fanatiker Tausende unschuldige Menschen umbringen und deren Verteidiger keine wirksamen Mittel zum Schutz haben", sagte der Vizekanzler dem SPIEGEL. Es sei "ein Dilemma", aber "am Ende dürfen wir bei einem Völkermord vor unseren Augen nicht tatenlos zuschauen", ergänzte der Wirtschaftsminister.

Berlin - The Social Democrat leader Sigmar Gabriel has been seen to be open to weapon shipments to Iraq. "We cannot look on, as fanatics armed to the teeth slay thousands of innocent people and whose defenders have no effective means of protection,"  said the Vice-Chancellor to the SPIEGEL. "A dilemma" it is, but "in the end we cannot watch the genocide before our eyes and do nothing," adds the Minister of Economic Affairs.

Die Bundesregierung würde eine internationale Mission im Nordirak begrüßen und sie unterstützen. Das berichtet der SPIEGEL unter Berufung auf Regierungskreise. Bedingung dafür ist allerdings ein entsprechender Beschluss des Uno-Sicherheitsrats.

Zugleich wünschen sich Mitglieder der kurdischen Regionalregierung konkret benannte Waffenlieferungen von der Bundesregierung. "Wir brauchen so schnell wie möglich moderne Sturmgewehre wie das deutsche G36 und panzerbrechende Waffen", sagte Oberst Hasar Ismail, Berater des kurdischen Peschmerga-Ministers Mustafa Kadir, dem SPIEGEL. Kadir selber erklärte, die Extremisten der Terrorgruppe "Islamischer Staat" (IS) hätten Hunderte gepanzerte "Humvee"-Fahrzeuge der irakischen Armee erbeutet. Ohne die schnelle Lieferung panzerbrechender Waffen hätten seine Kämpfer gegen die Fahrzeuge "keine Chance".

However it is on the condition of a corresponding decision from the UN security council. At the same time, members of the Kurdish regional government wish for concrete weapon consignments appointed by the German government. "We need modern assault rifles like the German G36 and armor piercing weapons as quickly as possible," as said by Oberst Hasar Ismail to der SPIEGEL, adviser to the Kurdish Peschmerga minister Mustafa Kadir. Kadir himself explained, the extremists of the terrorist group 'Islamist State' (IS) have hundreds of 'Humvee' armor plated vehicles, captured by the Iraqi Army. Without the fast consignments of armor piercing weapons his fighters have 'no chance' against the vehicles. 

Auch in der Union mehren sich die Stimmen für Waffenlieferungen. CDU-Vizechefin Julia Klöckner sagte dem SPIEGEL: "Wer Waffenlieferungen grundsätzlich ausschließt, wird beim Kirchentag zwar mit viel Applaus bedacht, als Politiker kann man aber nicht nur auf den Applaus und den ruhigen Schlaf schielen - Verantwortung heißt auch Abwägen, das Schlimmere verhindern."

Auch Landwirtschaftsminister Christian Schmidt (CSU) sieht die Bundesregierung in der Pflicht: "Die Frage der deutschen Verantwortung in der Welt ist keine abstrakte Diskussion mehr." Im Extremfall sollten auch Schutzausrüstung, Defensiv- und Abwehrwaffen geliefert werden, zum Beispiel leicht bedienbares Material wie die Panzerabwehrrakete "Milan". Schmidt sagte: "Sich zurücklehnen und hinterher die Toten zählen - das ist keine Option."

Agricultural minister Christian Schmidt (CSU) also sees the Government as being obliged to step in: 'The question of German responsibility in the world is no longer an abstract discussion.' In the extreme case protective equipment, defensive- and control weapons should also be shipped, for example easily operated equipment like the anti-tank missiles 'Milan'. Schmidt says, "Retreating and afterward counting the deaths- that is no option."

Daniel: Ich wollte eigentlich erst einen Mathe-Test mit euch schreiben...
Daniel: Firstly I actually wanted to do a maths test with you...

Daniel: ...aber das durften wir nicht. Deshalb haben wir uns gedacht, wir quatschen mit euch ein bisschen über das Thema Respekt, weil wir uns dafür sehr einsetzen. Habt ihr Bock?

Daniel: Dann mal die erste Frage: Wer von euch möchte mit Respekt behandelt werden?
Daniel: Right then, the first question: Who from you all would like to be treated with respect?

Daniel: Und behandelt ihr auch immer alle mit Respekt?
Daniel: And do you always handle everyone with respect?

Daniel: Das sind auf jeden Fall deutlich weniger Hände. Was glaubt ihr denn, woran das liegt?
Daniel: That is definitely considerably fewer hands. What do you think that is?

Schüler: Vielleicht daran, dass mein Gegenüber keine Respektperson ist.
Pupil: Perhaps the fact, that my counterpart isn't a person to be respected.

Carolin: Siehst du nicht jede Person als Respektperson an? Also als eine Person, die du respektieren musst?
Carolin: Do you not see every person as a person deserving of respect? So as a person, that you must respect?

Schüler: Nein, nicht jeden.
Pupil: No, not everyone.

Carolin: In was für einer Situation hat es jemand nicht verdient, von dir respektvoll behandelt zu werden?
Carolin: In what kind of situation has someone not deserved to be treated respectfully by you?

Schüler: Na ja, die, die einfach rumnerven und nicht ernst zu nehmen sind.
Pupil: Well, those, who simply get on your nerves and aren't to be taken seriously.

Daniel: Ich denke, es gibt Menschen, mit denen man besser auskommt, und es gibt Menschen, mit denen kommt man nicht so gut aus. Dennoch hat es jeder Mensch verdient, respektvoll behandelt zu werden. Und wenn man mit jemandem nicht auskommt, dann meidet man den einfach und sagt sich: Hey, der macht sein Ding, ich mach mein Ding, und wir sind alle cool damit.
Daniel: I think there are people, with whom you get on better with and there is people, with whom you don't get on with so well. All the same, every person deserves to be treated respectfully. And if you don't get on well with someone, then simply avoid them and say to yourself: Hey, they do their thing, I do my thing and we are all cool with that.

Vincent: Ob man Respekt vor Menschen hat, entscheidet man daran, wie sie aussehen und was für Klamotten sie tragen.
Vincent: Whether you have respect for people, is decided upon what they look like and what kind of clothing they wear.

Daniel: Klar, der erste Eindruck zählt. Aber trotzdem sollte man alle Menschen mit Respekt behandeln.
Daniel: Sure, the first impression counts. But nevertheless one should treat everyone with respect.

Carolin: Wir wollen heute auch über Mobbing reden. Kommt doch mal nach vorne und schreibt auf, was euch dazu einfällt.
Carolin: We want discuss bullying today. Come up and write down what you think.

Nach und nach werden immer mehr Begriffe zusammengetragen. Unter anderem "Opfer", "Angst", "Intoleranz", "Beleidigung", "Demütigung", "Vorurteile" und "Eifersucht". Nun soll die Klasse über das Thema diskutieren.

Gradually more and more concepts are gathered together. Among other things- 'victim', 'fear', 'intolerance', 'abuse', 'humiliation', 'prejudice' and 'jealousy'. Now the class should discuss the matter. 

Carolin: Was sind das für Menschen, die mobben?
Carolin: What are those people who bully?

Daniel: Menschen, die neidisch auf andere sind. Oder keine Freunde haben.
Daniel: People who are jealous of others. Or have no friends.

Sophia: Leute, die keinen Respekt vor sich selbst haben.
Sophia: People who have respect for themselves.

Josa: Typen, die sich stärker fühlen als andere.
Josa: Guys who feel stronger than others.

Carolin: Habt ihr selbst schon Mobbing erlebt?
Carolin: Have you yourselves experienced bullying already?

Vincent: Es werden immer Menschen mit Schwachstellen diskriminiert. Zum Beispiel, wenn sie Segelohren haben.
Vincent: People with weak points are always discriminated against. For example, if you have sticky-out ears.

Sophia: Auch Klassenlehrer mobben. Ich selbst wurde von einer Klassenlehrerin gemobbt und habe deshalb sogar die Schule geschwänzt.
Sophia: Form teachers also bully. I was bullied by a form teacher myself and as a result have even skipped school.

Carlo: In der Grundschule wurde ein Junge ständig geschubst. Er war kleiner als die anderen. Die Größeren haben das Mobbingkreis genannt.
Carlo: In primary school a boy was constantly shoved. He was smaller than the others. The older ones named the circle of bullies.

Hannah: Weggucken ist halt einfacher. Hier hat sich die Hofaufsicht auch schon weggestellt.
Hannah: Looking away is just easier. Here supervision has already been taken away.

Naomi: Leute aus der Parallelklasse haben mich mit Schnee eingerieben. Sie meinten, ich sei kein richtiges Mädchen. Ich stand da drüber und fand die Beleidigungen eher peinlich. Aber mein Freund wurde sogar verprügelt.
Naomi: People from the forms have hit me with snow. They reckon that I'm not a proper girl. I endured it and found the humiliation rather embarrassing. But even my friend got hit.

Carolin: Wie sollte man darauf reagieren?
Carolin: How should one react to it?

Paul: Sich Eltern oder Lehrern anvertrauen. Die können was tun.
Paul: Confide in a parent or a teacher, who can do something.

Sasha: Die Mobber ignorieren.
Sasha: Ignore the bullies.

Daniel: Das ist in Extremfällen schwierig. Aber drüberstehen ist gut, wenn's geht.
Daniel: That is hard in extreme cases. But staying above such things is good when it is done.

Adam: Man sollte sich Freunde suchen - eine Gruppe sein.
Adam: You should find yourself friends - be a group.

Daniel: Genau richtig, haltet da zusammen! Sucht euch Verbündete oder sprecht mit Eltern und Lehrern darüber. Mobbing gibt es heute auch im Social Web. Da muss man aufpassen. Denn was dort geschrieben wird, können plötzlich Zigtausende lesen. Das ist nicht mehr so wie früher, wenn jemand einen gemeinen Spruch an die Schultoilette geschrieben hat. Und alles, was dort geschrieben wird, kriegt man aus dem Netz nicht mehr raus. Es gibt sogar Jugendliche, die sich deswegen das Leben genommen haben.
Daniel: Spot-on, stick together! Find an ally or speak with a teacher or parent about it. Today there is also bullying on the social-web. There one have to be careful. As what is written there can suddenly be read by thousands. It is not like before, wenn someone wrote a cowardly scrawl on the school toilets. And people cannot take anything away of what is written there. There are even young people, who have taken their lives because of it.

Laura: Da kommt es auf die Eltern an. Sie sollten ihre Kinder stärker kontrollieren. Heutzutage wird den Kindern das zu sehr freie Hand gelassen.
Laura: Given that, it depends on the parents. They should control their children more keenly. Nowadays children are left to their devices.

Naomi: Ich will eben wissen, was auf Facebook über mich geschrieben wird. Das Problem ist halt, dass die meisten User sich bei Facebook stärker fühlen als außerhalb des Internets.
Naomi: I want to know exactly was is written about me on Facebook. The problem is just that most users feel more confident on Facebook than off of the interest.

Sophie: Man sollte da aber auch keinen riesigen Hype draus machen, was über einen geschrieben wird. Zum Beispiel. Man ist selber schuld, wenn man Warnungen nicht ernst nimmt. Und sollte da nicht den Eltern die Schuld geben.

Sophie: But also you shouldn't make a big hype out of what is written over Facebook. For example you are yourself to blame if you don't take the warning seriously. And shouldn't give the parents the blame.

Carolin: Gerade die Schule hat die Verantwortung, über Mobbing und Cyber-Mobbing aufzuklären. Vor allem dort, wo Eltern überfordert sind. Das Beste wäre wohl, wenn Experten von außerhalb an die Schulen kommen und über das Social Web aufklären würden.
Just the school has the responsibility to explain bullying and cyber-bullying. Especially there where parents are swamped. It would be best, if experts come from outside the school and would inform people about social media. 

Keine schlechte Idee! Während Daniel darüber sinniert, dass mit den Daten im Internet auch Handel getrieben wird, unterbricht ihn Carolin. Das Ende der Stunde ist schon erreicht. Zum Abschluss geben Glasperlenspiel ihrer Klasse noch ein Zitat mit auf den Weg.

Results Day 2014: AQA German AS Level

I was very pleased with my grade for German, receiving an A... 53 marks for my oral and 120 marks for my unit 1 paper. I can't wait to see how my German may have improved over the summer, as this blog has helped my German skills massively. 
Hopefully A2 German will be just as rewarding as AS level has been. My advice: take on German to a-level- in fact take on any language you can.

I SCATTER MYSELF TOO WIDELY FOR THAT – CLAUDE CAHUN

"Jetzt fällt es mir wieder ein, es war Karneval. Ich hatte meine einsamen Stunden damit verbracht, meine Seele zu verhüllen. Die Masken waren so vollkommen, dass es ihnen gelang, sich auf dem Marktplatz des Bewusstseins zu treffen, ohne dass sie sich wiedererkannten. Ihre komische Hässlichkeit verführte mich, ich benutzte meine niedersten Instinkte; ich adoptierte junge Monster und zog sie auf. Aber die Schminke, die ich dazu benutzt hatte, schien nicht mehr abwischbar zu sein. Ich rieb so sehr, um die Haut zu reinigen, dass sie sich ablöste. Und meine Seele hatte wie ein lebendig gehäutetes Gesicht keine menschlichen Züge mehr."

"Now it comes again to my mind, it was a carnival. I had spent my lonely hours with it, to veil my soul. The masks were so perfect, that they were able to meet in the town square of consciousness, without recognizing themselves. Her comical ugliness seduced me, I used my basest instinct: I adopted a young monster and pulled it open. But the make-up, which I had used, seemed to be no longer erasable. I rubbed so hard, to clean the skin, that it came off. And my soul had, like a twisted expression on a face, no longer any human traits."

Was definiert unsere Identität? Ist es das Geschlecht? Das Aussehen? Oder sind es die Masken, die wir tragen? Eine Künstlerin macht sich Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts auf die Suche nach der Antwort auf diese Frage. Im Alter von 23 Jahren legt sie ihren mädchenhaften Namen ab, gibt sich ein geschlechtsloses Pseudonym, rasiert ihre langen Haare ab und wird zu ihrem Alter Ego Claude Cahun.

What defines our identity? Is it gender? Appearance? Or is it the masks which we wear? At the beginning of the twentieth century an artist set out on the search for the answer to this question. At the age of 23 years old she abandoned her girlish name, experimenting with a genderless pseudonym, shaving her long hair off and becoming her alter ego Claude Cahun.  

Die Surrealistin drückt sich vor allem durch ihre fotografierten Selbstportraits aus, die sie mal mit Collage-Techniken, mal mit Bildbearbeitung verfremdet. Sie spielt Theater, schreibt für Magazine wie die Homosexuellenzeitschrift „L'Amitié“ und verfasst ihre Gedanken in experimentellen Schriften.

The surrealist expressed herself primarily through her self portrait photography, that she distorted times with collage techniques and times with image editing. She acts, writes for magazines like the homosexual newspaper "L'Amitié" and composes her thoughts in experimental writings. 

Auf den Fotos schlüpft sie stets in andere Rollen. Sie spielt einen Mann, sie spielt eine Frau. Will sich selbst aber nicht einordnen. Alles, was sie von sich zeigt, sind ihre Masken, die ein „Ich“ verstecken, das sie nie preisgeben wird. „Ich sehe mich, also bin ich.“ Für die Französin ist es das Selbst, das man sich selbst zuschreibt. Die anderen können hinter die vielen Fassaden nicht blicken.

In the photos she constantly slips into other roles. She plays a man, she plays a women. But not wanting to classify herself. Everything, she shows of herself, are her masks, which hide an 'I', that she will never surrender. "I see, therefore I am." For the French woman it is 'the self', that one ascribes to oneself. The others can not look behind the curtain. 

Als Jüdin, als Frau, als Homosexuelle, als Kommunistin wird sie nie so bekannt wie die Künstler in ihrem Umfeld, André Breton oder Georges Bataille. Sie veröffentlicht nur wenige ihrer Werke, ein großer Teil wird durch die Nazis zerstört. In ihrem lyrischen Hauptwerk „Aveux non avenus“ (Nichtige Bekenntnisse) verarbeitet sie ihr Leben in Fragmenten und Gedankenstücken, beschäftigt sich mit der Frage nach Identität und Authentizität, mit der Trennung von Selbst und Körper.

As a Jew, as a woman, as a homosexual, as a communist she will never be as famous as the artists in her field,  André Breton or Georges Bataille. She published only a little of her work, a big part destroyed by the Nazis. In her lyrical magnum opus "Aveux non avenus" (Inane confessions) she handles her life in fragments and pieces of thoughts, engaging with the question of identity and authenticity, with the separation of self and body. 

Auf einigen ihrer Portraits schaut sie den Betrachter an, fordert ihn auf, in sie hineinzublicken. Auf anderen wirkt sie in sich gekehrt, als würde sie versuchen, sich nun doch endlich selbst zu entdecken. Ein „Ich“ kann niemals festgehalten werden, Cahun glaubt, sie verteilt sich auf zu viele Ebenen. Viel mehr geht es um eine Vielzahl von Ichs, die sie alle auf ihren Fotos darstellt – Spiegel, doppelte Belichtung oder der Zusammenschnitt mehrere Bilder zeigen, dass sie nie nur eins ist. 

„Unter dieser Maske eine andere Maske. Ich werde niemals aufhören, alle diese Gesichter abzuziehen.“

In some of her portraits she looks at an observer, inviting him to look inside. In others she appears to do some soul-searching, as if she is trying to finally discover herself. An 'I'/'self' can never be recorded. Cahun believes, it is distributed over too many levels. Rather, it comes to a multiplicity of self, all of which she is in her photos- mirrors, double exposure or the contemplation of several pictures, show that she is never just one.

Von Zeit zu Zeit sehnen wir uns in der Mode nach Veränderung. Manchmal muss die Eleganz der Gemütlichkeit weichen. Enge Röcken machen Platz für weite Hosen und Clutches müssen verschwinden, wenn Umhängetaschen zum Tragen kommen.

From time to time in fashion we crave change. Sometimes the elegance of privacy must give way. Tight skirts make room from for wide trousers, and clutches must disappear, when shoulder bags come to fruition.

Und seit einigen Saisons sind es immer seltener High Heels, die die weiblichen Füße zur Schau stellen. Sneakers kündigten eine neue Sportlichkeit an, die nur noch vom laufenden Trend getoppt werden konnte: dem neuen Komfort.

For some seasons now, it is ever rarer high heels, that female feet flaunt. Sneakers herald a new sporty drive, which could only be topped by the current trend: the new comfort.

Phoebe Philos „Furkenstocks“, die sie für Céline in ihrer S/S 2013 Kollektion präsentierte, markierten den Start. Zwei Saisons später zogen Labels wie Givenchy oder Helmut Lang nach. Doch seinen Ursprung hat die bequeme Pantolette im nördlichen Rheinland-Pfalz, um 1774, als das Unternehmen Birkenstock seinen Anfang fand.

Phoebe Philo's "Furkenstocks", which she showcased for Céline in her S/S 2013 collection, marked the beginning.  Two seasons later it has moved to labels like Givenchy or Helmut Lang. Yet the comfortable mules had its origins in North Rhineland-Pfalz, around 1774, when the company Birkenstock found its beginning.

Lange Zeit war die Firma ein kleines, unscheinbares Familienunternehmen, doch in den 70ern und 80ern wurden die anatomisch angepassten Schuhe bei Ärzten und bei Pflegepersonal beliebt, da das ausgeformte Fußbett das lange Stehen erleichtert. 

For a long time the firm was a small, unimpressive family business, yet in the 70s and 80s the anatomically adapted shoes were loved by doctors and nurses, as the moulded insole eases long standing. 

In diesem Sommer kommt der Komfort vom Krankenhaus über den Laufsteg an die Füße. Was vor ein Paar Jahren kaum vorstellbar war, ist heute nicht wegzudenken. Die Marke Birkenstock hat sich durchgesetzt, sich durch neue Designs und Farben einer anderen Zielgruppe angepasst. Vor allem aber ist es der völlig neue Kontext, in dem sich der Schuh präsentiert und so im kulturellen Verständnis als Trend angenommen  wird.

In this summer the comfort for your feet comes from the hospital over the catwalk. What was a few years ago scarcely imaginable, is today not out of the question. The brand Birkenstock has become accepted, adapting itself for a different target-group through new designs and colors. Primarily however it is the completely new context, in which the shoe has been introduced and is taken in the cultural understanding as a trend. 

Der Kult führte zu unzähligen Kopien von HighStreet-Ketten wie Zara und Co und schließlich auch zum Revival der Adilette. Sogar das Touri-Klischee der Socken in Sandalen könnte laut einigen Editorials und Trendprognosen bald seine Renaissance erleben.

The cult leads to countless copies from high-street chains like Zara and Co and finally also to the revival of the adilette (pool slider). Even the tourist cliché of socks and sandals could soon experience its renaissance, according to come editorials and trend forecasts. 

Was vor einigen Saisons noch unvorstellbar schien, ist heute vertraut. Weil der Geschmack sich ändert und Mode eben nicht das bleibt, was sie letztes Jahr noch war. Wo Füße sich schonen und nicht quälen wollen und Sexyness dem Komfort weichen muss, wo Birkenstocks zu Designerkleiden und Slides am Catwalk statt am Pool getragen werden. Weil aus Zeitgeist auch immer ein Zeitstil folgt. So lange, bis auch die Pantolette verschwindet, um wieder in der Masse der gemeinen Kleidung unterzugehen. Nur um Platz zu machen für High Heels, für Loafers, für Ballerinas oder Wedges. Für eine neue Mode und einen neuen Zeitstil.

What seemed a few seasons ago still unimaginable, is today familiar. Because the taste changes and fashion just doesn't stay what it was last year. Where feet want to rest and not be in pain, and sexiness must give way to comfort, where Birkenstocks are worn with designer clothes and slides on the catwalk instead of the pool. Because Zeitgeist also always follows style of the time.  Until the mule disappears, again to be lost in the mass of ordinary clothes. Only to make room for high heels, for loafers, for ballerinas or wedges. For a new fashion and a new style of the moment.

Eco-Warrior

Ein idyllisches Fleckchen Erde wird in den ersten Sekunden des neuen, zweiminütigen Kurzfilms von Replay gezeigt. Regen tropft in Slowmotion von den Blättern und Erinnerungen an den Geruch von nassem Waldboden werden wach.

An idyllic spot is shown the first seconds of the new two-minute short film from Replay. Rains drips in slow motion from the leafs and memories of the smell of the damp forest floor are awoken.

Die Protagonisten, nur mit Hosen bekleidet und mit Schriftzügen auf den nackten Oberkörper bemalt, jagen durch das Dickicht und demonstrieren uns mit vollem Körpereinsatz, was es heißt, für einen guten Zweck einzustehen. Replay hat sich bewusst für Aleksandra Orbeck-Nilssen und Enok Groven entschieden – beide norwegische Landsmänner – die auch im echten Leben für unsere Umwelt kämpfen. Model und Schauspielerin Aleksandra hat mit Nanofasa eine Stiftung ins Leben gerufen, die sich für die namibische Bevölkerung und deren Erhaltung von Natur und Kultur einsetzt. Das männliche Pendant Enok, Gründer von FashionAgainstClimateChange, arbeitet ökologische Themen auf und nimmt vor allem die Modeindustrie und ihre Herstellungsprozesse unter die Lupe.

The protagonists, only clad in jeans and with writing painted on their naked chests, chasing through the undergrowth and demonstrating to us with full use of body, what it means to stand up for a good cause.  Replay deliberately chose Aleksandra Orbeck-Nilssen and Enok Groven- both Norwegian- who also fight in real life for our environment. Model and actress Aleksandra has created a foundation with Nanofasa, which campaigns for Namibian population and conservation of their nature and culture. Male counterpart Enok, founder of FashionAgainstClimateChange, works on ecological matters and examines, above all, the fashion industry and their manufacturing processes.

Wer wenn nicht diese beiden Eco-Warrior eignen sich hervorragend als Repräsentanten für die neue Replay Laserblast L.I.F.E Kollektion. Followed by a process with laser-beams and a mild Stone-Wash treatment at low temperatures. The last touch; the jeans are coloured with a further wash with browns, greys and ocher coloured pigments.
