Martha Gellhorn- an American novelist and journalist who
 covered both WW2 and the war in Vietnam. Although a renowned
writer in her own right, she also gained celebrity by marrying fellow
American writer Ernest Hemingway. 

Nein, es gibt keinen besonderen Anlass. Es liegt weder ein Weltfrauen- noch Muttertag an. Nicht mal der Todestag einer Martha Gellhorn oder Elisabeth Selbert jährt sich heute.

No, there is no special occasion. It is neither a World Women or Mother's day. It is not even the anniversary of the death of Martha Gellhorn or Elisabeth Selbert today.

Aber reglementierte Zeitfenster, in denen Frauen der Historie und Gegenwart gepriesen werden bevor ihr Schaffen wieder vom Alltag gefressen wird, legen wir am besten in die imaginäre Schublade mit der Beschriftung „Unsinn“. Denn: Unsere Kultur, unsere Zeit, unser Leben wären nur halb so toll, würden sie nicht konstant von Frauen geprägt.

But regimented windows of time, in which women of past and present are praised, before their word is yet again engulfed by the everyday, lies best in the imaginary drawer with the label 'Nonsense'. Why?: Our culture, our time, our lives would be only half as great, were they not molded constantly by women. 

Lange blieben die weiblichen Ambitionen ungesehen, ihre Stimmen ungehört. Vor allem in der Kunstgeschichte wurden Frauen wie Camille Claudel oder Sonia Delaunay bestenfalls als talentierte Schatten ihrer Männer angesehen. Ihr eigenständiges Oeuvre blieb lange unbeachtet. Künstlerinnen wie Niki de Saint Phalle, die fortschreitende Emanzipation, die Gleichberechtigungsbestrebungen, die sexuelle Revolution, Musikerinnen wie Janis Joplin oder Kathleen Hanna – all’ diese Punkte, zu denen sich noch zahlreiche Faktoren gesellen könnten, leiteten das Heute ein. Das Heute, in dem schon viel erreicht wurde und noch viel vorsteht. Das Heute, das von starken "Zeitgeistfrauen" mitdefiniert wird.

Long have female ambitions stayed unseen, their voices unheard. Especially in the history of art, women like Camille Claudel or Sonia Delauney were at best seen as talented shadows of their male counterparts. Their independent work stayed long unobserved. Artists like Niki de Saint Phalle, the gradual emancipation, the equality efforts, the sexual revolution, artists like Janis Joplin or Kathleen Hanna- all these points , which could still be joined up by numerous factors, ushered in today. The today, in which much has been reached and still more is projected. The today, that is co-defined with strong 'Zeitgeist women'. 

Eine wichtige Popkulturfigur ist Janine Rostron aka Planningtorock. Die englische Musikerin, Regisseurin, Performance Künstlerin und Gründerin des Labels Human Level nimmt eine Sonderstellung im momentanen Geschehen ein. Allein mit ihrer kreativen Vielfältigkeit könnte sie als Gesicht der Slash-Generation dienen – das reicht ihr aber nicht. Obendrauf setzt sie politisches Engagement und eine sozialkritische Haltung. Mit ihrem Album „Human Drama“, das Anfang des Jahres erschien, erschuf sie ein vertontes Manifest für Gleichheit, selbstbestimmte Liebe, das Öffnen von Geschlechtergrenzen.

An important pop-culture figure is Janine Rostron aka Planningtorock. The English musician, director, performing artist and founder of the label Human Level occupies a special position in current events. With her creative diversity  alone, she could serve as the face of the Slash-Generation – but it is not enough for her. She puts political engagement and a socially critical attitude on top of it. With her album 'Human Drama', which was released at the beginning of the year, she created a manifesto set to music for equality, self-determined love, the opening of gender boundaries. 

Sophia Amoruso

Auch Sophia Amoruso gehört zur Riege der Superfrauen. Mit 22 Jahren gründete sie 2006 nach langen Irrwegen den Ebay-Store „Nasty Gal Vintage“. Zunächst als Ein-Frau-Unternehmen, heute mit über 350 Mitarbeitern. Sie erkannte das wachsende Interesse für Vintage- und Second-Hand-Stücke, nutzte geschickt die Möglichkeiten der Digitalität, baute sich ein 100 Millionen Dollar Geschäft auf. Ihre Erfahrungen und Ratschläge gibt Amoruso in ihrem Buch#GIRLBOSS auf persönliche und universelle Weise weiter. Eine etwas nahbarere Erfolgsgeschichte, als die von Sheryl Sandberg.

Sophia Amoruso also belongs to the league of super-women. At 22 years old she founded the Ebay-Store 'Nasty Gal Vintage' in 2006 after a long struggle. Initially a one-women business, now with over 350 employees. She recognized the growing interest for vintage- and second-hand pieces, using clever digital possibilities, building up a million dollar business. Amoruso offers up her experiences and advice on in her book #GIRLBOSS in both a personal and universal manner. A slightly more approachable success story than that from Sheryl Sandberg.

Annie Clark can not be missed out, offering new acoustic and visual charm as the music vanguard St Vincent. Or Petra Collins with her entourage consisting of Tavi Gevinson, India Salvor Menuez and Karley Sciortino, who create a future picture of femininity. Leandra Medine. Grimes. No Bra. Stella McCartney. Your mother. Neighbour. Sister.  Friend or foe. They are all women, mold our world, to inspire new approaches and attitudes. Without a particular occasion. Without a given time window. 

Geheimdienstkritisches Graffiti: Banksy-Kunstwerk übersprüht

Streetart-Künstler Banksy ist wieder Opfer einer Attacke auf eines seiner Kunstwerke geworden: Unbekannte haben ein Bild von drei Agenten beschmiert, das Banksy in der Nähe des britischen GHCQ-Geheimdiensts in Cheltenham gesprüht hatte.

Streetart artist Banksy has again become a victim of an attack on one of his art works: yet unidentified individuals have vandilised an image of there agents, that Banksy sprayed in the area of the British GHCQ-secret service in Cheltenham. 

Cheltenham - Ein Graffiti des britischen Streetart-Künstlers Banksy ist im englischen Cheltenham mit roter und goldener Farbe übersprüht worden. "Der Banksy ist mit Anti-Graffiti-Farbe geschützt, aber es ist ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit, weil die Farbe durch die Schutzschicht dringen und das Kunstwerk ruinieren kann", sagte eine Sprecherin der von Geschäftsleuten gegründeten Initiative "Rettet den Banksy". In der Nacht hatten Anwohner eine Gruppe Männer mit einer großen Abdeckplane weglaufen sehen - ob sie etwas mit dem Anschlag auf das Kunstwerk zu tun haben, ist bislang unklar.

Cheltenham - A piece of graffiti of the British Streetart artist Banksy in Cheltenham has been sprayed over with red and gold paint. "The Banksy is protected with Anti-Graffiti paint, but it is a race against time, because the paint can penetrate through the protective gel and ruin the art piece," says a speaker of the initiative established by business folk 'Rescue Banksy'. In the night residents saw a group of men running away with a large tarpaulin - whether it was something to do with the attack on the art work is so far unclear.

Das Graffiti in Cheltenham hatte schon im April für Aufsehen gesorgt: Dort war das Bild im Stil Banksys über Nacht an einer Hauswand aufgetaucht. Es zeigt drei Spione, die mit Abhörtechnik auf eine tatsächlich dort stehende Telefonzelle zugehen - Banksy hatte später über seine Homepage bestätigt, der Künstler zu sein. Das Hauptquartier des in Abhörskandale verstrickten britischen Geheimdienstes GCHQ ist nur wenige Kilometer entfernt. Ein Kunstsammler will das Bild kaufen und aus der Mauer entfernen lassen.

The graffiti in Cheltenham had already caused a stir in April: over night there appeared a picture in the style of Banksy on a house wall. It shows three spies approaching an already standing telephone box with phone tapping equipment - Banksy had later confirmed on his homepage to be the artist. The headquarters of the British secret service GCHQ, entangled in the phone tapping scandal, is only a few kilometers away. An art collector wants to buy the image and remove it from the wall.

Banksys Streetart-Kunstwerke machen immer wieder Schlagzeilen: Zuletzt waren einem seiner Werke in Bristol nur wenige Stunden in Freiheit vergönnt: Dort, wo zuvor noch ein eng umschlungenes, in seine Handys vertieftes Paar zu sehen war, hing kurze Zeit später bloß noch ein Zettel: "Das neue Banksy-Werk ist in unserem Club, um es vor Vandalismus oder sonstigem Schaden zu schützen." Der Zettel stammte von den Mitarbeitern eines nahe gelegenen Jugendklubs, dessen Mitarbeiter das Kunstwerk "Mobile Lovers" mit Brechstangen entfernten. Der rund 120 Jahre alte Klub soll mit den Spenden der Besucher vor der Pleite gerettet werden.

Banksy's street-art work makes the headlines again and again: Recently his work in Bristol was allowed a few hours of freedom: where previously a tightly hugging couple absorbed in their phones was to be seen, a short time later only a note hung: 'The new Banksy work is in our club, in order to protect against vandalism or other damage'. The note comes from the staff of a nearby youth club, who removed the piece 'Mobile Lovers' with crowbars. The around 120 year old club should be rescued from bankruptcy with the donations of visitors.

"Schwarzfahrer" - Fare Dodger 

This short film is one of my favorites, it does nothing to discourage the stereotype that Germans are xenophobic but the ending is well worth enduring the bad 90s soundtrack. 

"Kleingeld" - Small Change 

Small change is a calming, poignant short film directed by Marc-Andreas Bocher. While some may view it as being too pretentious and heavy on symbolism I view it as a simple reflection on value- that is of both money and relationships. 

Belfast: Live reading Matthias Politycki

Matthias Politycki was born in 1955 in Karlsruhe, Germany and is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed literary authors writing in German. He sold over 200,000 copies and published over 20 novels and poetry collections. Royals im Kindesalter: Die wollen auch nur spielen

Die Queen hantierte mit scharfem Gerät, Prinz Charles spielte Camping und Prinz Andrew fuhr einen Miniatur-Agentenflitzer: Eine Ausstellung in London zeigt, womit die britischen Royals sich als Kinder die Zeit vertrieben.

The Queen was busy with sharp tools, Prince Charles played camping and Prince Andrew drove a miniaturized agent's roundabout: An exhibition in London shows, with what the British Royals killed time with as children. 

London - Mal eben auf die Straße gehen und mit den Mädchen und Jungs von nebenan Verstecken spielen: Das ist für die Kinder der britischen Royals nicht drin. Aber spielen wollen sie trotzdem - und haben dabei keinen Mangel an Spielsachen, wie eine neuen Ausstellung in London zeigt. "Royal Childhood" heißt sie, die Exponate stammen aus zweieinhalb Jahrhunderten. Es ist ein ungewöhnlicher Zeitenspiegel: Die Welt des Hochadels, erzählt anhand von Spielzeugautos, Puppen, Kinderkleidung, Kritzeleien und privaten Filmaufnahmen.

London- Time to go up the street and play with the boys and girls from next door: That is not possible for the children of the British Royals. But they wanted to play all the same- and have no shortage of play things to do so, as a new exhibition in London shows. It is called "Royal Childhood", the exhibits stem form two and half centuries. It is an unusual look back in time: The world of high nobility is explained with the help of toy cars, puppets, children's clothing, scribbles and private footage. 

Es überrascht nicht, dass die Windsor-Kinder materiell nicht zu kurz kommen. Zu sehen sind etwa pelzbesetzte Samthausschuhe, die Prinz Albert 1842 im Buckingham-Palast trug. Es gibt eine Nachbildung der vierstöckigen Torte, die Queen Victorias achtes Kind Prinz Leopold 1853 bekam. Die Camper-Vereinigung Caravan Club schenkte Prinzessin Anne und Prinz Charles 1955 einen Mini-Wohnwagen."Man vergisst leicht, dass Königskinder Kinder sind wie alle anderen", sagte Kuratorin Anna Reynolds, "ob es nun darum geht, Schreiben zu lernen, oder sich vielleicht nicht ganz vorbildlich zu benehmen". So beschrieb sich die künftige Queen Victoria im September 1832 im Alter von 13 Jahren in ihrem "Benimm-Heft" als "sehr, sehr, sehr, sehr schrecklich unartig!"

It is not surprising that the Windsor children didn't get a raw deal, materially anyway. To see are some fur trimmed Samt-Hausschuhe, worn by Prince Albert in 1842 in Buckingham Palace. There is a replica of the four tiered cake, that Queen Victoria's eighth child Prince Leopald received in 1853. The Camper Federation Caravan Club sent Princess Anne and Prince Charles a mini-caravan in 1955. "You forget easily, that Royal children are like all the others," says curator Anne Reynolds, "whether it is learning to write or not behaving the best." In her booklet of conduct Queen Victoria described herself as as "very, very, very, very terribly naughty!" in September 1832.

Ein Highlight: Die Mini-Version des Aston Martin DB5, den Prinz Andrew 1966 bekam. Es ist die originalgetreue Nachbildung des legendären Wagens, den James Bond in "Goldfinger" fuhr. Entsprechend ist das Nummernschild gewählt: JB 007. Bei einer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 16 Stundenkilometern verfügt das Spielzeugauto über zahlreiche der legendären Extras des Film-Fahrzeugs wie ein drehbares Nummernschild oder versteckte Spielzeug-Maschinengewehre.

A Highlight: The mini-version of the Aston Martin DB5, which Prince Andrew received in 1966. It is the original period imitation of the legendary car, driven by James Bond in "Goldfinger". The number plate was suitably chosen: JB 007. With a highest speed of 16 km/hr the toy car comes with numerous extras from the film vehicle, like a turning number plate and a concealed toy-machine gun.   

Zahlreiche Exponate eröffnen auch Einblicke in die Kindheit der Queen. 

Der "Guardian" berichtet über einige besonders reizende Details: Aus dem Baby-Tagebuch der Queen gehe hervor, dass sie am 26. Januar 1927 ihren ersten Zahn bekommen und etwa zweieinhalb Monate später, am 11. April, zu krabbeln begonnen habe. Zwei Puppen mit farblich perfekt abgestimmten Outfits scheinen stilbildend gewirkt zu haben - immerhin sind Hut, Mantel und Kostüm der Monarchin ebenfalls stets genauestens aufeinander abgestimmt.

Many exhibits also give an insight into the childhood of the Queen. The "Guardian" reported about a few charming details: from the Queen's Baby-dairy it arose, that she got her first tooth on the 26th January 1927 and some two and half months later, on the 11th April, began to crawl. Two puppets with perfectly color-coordinated outfits seemed to have appeared stylistically- after all the hat, coat and costume of the princesses are also always closely matched each other. 

Und die Queen hatte wohl schon früh Freude daran, die Tradition des Teetrinkens zu pflegen, mit einem Service, bestehend aus Tassen und einer Kanne in Hasenform. Offenbar konnte die junge Elizabeth aber auch etwas mit handfestem Werkzeug anfangen: Ein Pfadfinder-, ein Taschenmesser und ein Stück Kordel lassen erahnen, dass die heutige Monarchin Abenteuern als Kind durchaus nicht abgeneigt war.

The Queen took joy in tending to the tradition of tea-drinking from an early age, with a service consisting of cups and a tea-pot in a bunny shape. Apparently the young Elizabeth could also however start something with sturdy tools: a scout-, a penknife and a piece of cord, show that today's monarch was by no means adverse to adventure as a child.

Brighton. Leckere Cocktails, eine hübsche Promenade, der Brighton Pier, ein Pferdekarussell, eine nette Innenstadt samt schönstem Bücherladen aller Zeiten, betrunkene Engländer, die einen zu Alkohol und Pommes einladen, weil man aussieht wie ein Wikinger (sehr nett -.-), traurige Engländer, weil im Fußball mal wieder verloren wurde.

Brighton. Tasty cocktails, a pretty promenade, the Brighton Pier, a horse carousel, a nice town centre including some of the nicest book shops of all times, drunk Englishmen, that invited one to alcohol and chips, because you looked like a Viking (very nice -.-), sad Englishmen, because the football had been lost again.

Eröffnung der Commonwealth Games: Ärger für tanzendes Törtchen

Angeblich litt eine 25-jährige Schottin an einer Mandelentzündung und kam deshalb nicht zur Arbeit. In Wirklichkeit tanzte sie als Cupcake auf der Eröffnungszeremonie der Commonwealth Games - dummerweise auch über die Fernsehbildschirme ihrer Kollegen.

A 25 year old Scottish women was reportedly suffering tonsillitis and therefore couldn't come to work. In reality she was dancing as a cupcake at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. Stupidly, also over the TV screens of her colleges. 

Glasgow - Amy McIntosh hatte offenbar nicht damit gerechnet, dass die Kameras ausgerechnet auf sie halten würden. Bei der Eröffnungszeremonie der Commonwealth Games in Glasgow sah man sie einen überdimensionalen Tunnock's Teacake, einen speziell schottischen Cupcake, in die Luft recken. Mit einem breiten Lächeln und mit kariertem Oberteil tanzte die junge Frau umher - offenbar kerngesund.

Glasgow- Amy McIntosh had obviously not anticipated that out of all the people, the cameras would hold on her. At the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow you saw her lifted in the air in a oversized Tunnocks Teacake, a particularly Scottish cupcake. With a broad smile and with a tartan bonnet the young lady danced away-clearly in rude health!

In Wirklichkeit nahm die junge Schottin als Freiwillige an der Eröffnungszeremonie der Spiele teil. Statt dafür allerdings Urlaub zu nehmen oder die Absenzen mit ihrem Arbeitgeber abzusprechen, meldete sie sich krank. "Wir hätten sie doch freigestellt", behauptet ein Sprecher ihres Arbeitgebers gegenüber der britischen Tageszeitung "Daily Mail". Das wiederum erstaunte vor allem ihre Kollegen vor dem Bildschirm. Bei ihnen hatte sich die 25-jährige Krankenschwester zuvor krankgemeldet. Angeblicher Grund: eine fiese Mandelentzündung.

In reality the young Scottish woman was taking part as a volunteer for the opening ceremony of the games. Instead of taking a holiday-break for it or arranging the absence with her employer, she called in sick. "We would have released her," claimed a spokesperson from her work to the British newspaper the Daily Mail. This astounded her collegues before the screen further. The 25 year old nurse has already reported in sick to them. The apparent reason: nasty tonsillitis. 

McIntosh blieb wohl für insgesamt drei Wochen ihrer Arbeit fern. Nachdem ihre Kollegen und Vorgesetzten sie im ersten Akt der Eröffnungszeremonie tanzen sahen, wird vermutet, dass sie sich auch für die Proben selbst beurlaubt hat. Für ihre Cupcake-Auftritte könnte sie jedenfalls bald ausreichend Zeit haben: Ihr droht die Kündigung.

McIntosh stayed well away from her work for three weeks. After her colleagues and bosses had seen her dancing in the first act of the opening ceremony,it was presumed that she had also been given leave for the games. For her Cupcake-appearance she could soon have sufficient time off however: She faces dismissal.
