Da ist man nur zwei Wochen im Urlaub und schon gilt die geliebte Hauptstadt als uncool. Die New York Times und der Rolling Stone haben uns in Artikeln wie eine heiße Kartoffel fallen lassen, wie Amy & Pink das zusammen fasst. Wir müssen natürlich auch noch unseren Senf dazugeben.

Die Relevanz der Clubs für die Berliner Ausgehkultur hat in der Tat abgenommen. Ich glaube aber, dass es zu einfach ist, nur die neue Nachbarschaft, die geldgierigen Investoren und lallenden Touristen dafür verantwortlich zu machen. Musikalisch fehlt es seit Jahren an Innovation. Wann wurde das erste Mal zu Techno getanzt? Und wie lange sollen wir noch eine einsetzende Viertelbassdrum morgens um 7 Uhr abfeiern? Die Aufregung, gerade für uns Berliner, ist einfach vorbei. Gefühlt sind wir in einer Endlosschleife von Techno- und Hip Hop-Parties gefangen. Eine neue Jugend- und Musikkultur ist nicht in Sicht. Da helfen auch keine Pillen und kein Boiler Room.

The relevance of clubs for the Berlin night-out culture has in fact declined. I believe however, that it is too easy only to make the new neighbourship, of both money-grabbing investors and babbling tourists responsible for it. Musically, it has been lacking innovation for years. When did we dance to techno for the first time? And for how long should we still party till the incipient fourth bass drum at 7 O'clock? The excitement, even for us Berliners, is simply over. Seemingly we are trapped in an endless loop of techno and Hip-hop. A new youth- and music culture is not in sight. A fact that no pills or Boiler Room can help. 

Boiler Room is a music project launched in London in March 2010 that organizes DJ performances and Live music sessions in small mostly private locations and then streams the show through online video streaming services such as Ustream, Livestream and YouTube. Ein Grund (von vielen) für das Clubsterben dürfte der demographische Wandel sein. Denn nach der Wende ging die Geburtenrate der Bundesrepublik so richtig in den Keller. Und diese Kids wären jetzt im besten Ausgehalter und fehlen natürlich. Ein weiterer Grund sind die gelangweilten und wegbleibenden Berliner. In Mitte hat das Flamingo von Club-Impresario Connie Opper über Nacht seinen Namen geändert, um dem sterbenden Schwan noch mal neuen Lippenstift drauf zu tun. Die Schminke hat nicht gereicht: Jetzt freut sich die Fläche wieder über einen neuen Nachmieter und Opper versucht sein Glück in Neukölln. In seinen Clubs und auf seinen Partys wollten vor 10 Jahren alle Berliner tanzen. Ähnlich erging es dem Picknick in der Dorotheenstrasse. Wenn dort nicht Engtanz oder Abschiedsparty stattfand, war die Luft raus. Während sich die Diskokugeln nun einsam oder für Touristen drehen, gehen die alten Clubber lieber in die neuen Restaurants und Bars der Stadt. Denn dort findet gerade die Innovation statt.

And these kids now are at the 'going-out' age but lacking in number. A further reason for it, are the bored and disillusioned Berliners. In Mitte, the club-impresario of Flamingo; Connie Opper has changed his name over night, in order to give the dying swan some new lipstick. The make-up was not enough: Now the space looks forward to a new tenant and Opper is now trying his luck in Neukölln. All Berliners have wanted to dance in his clubs and at his parties for 10 years. Picknick on Dorostheenstrasse has fared similarly. If there was no slow dancing or stag parties, its appeal was lost. The discos-balls now only turn for the lonely or tourists, the old clubbers prefer the new restaurants and bars in the town. As there is currently innovation there.

Prince Charles, Berlin

Als ich am Wochenenden um 22:30 Uhr (!) in der Schlange zum Parker Bowles stand, haben um mich herum alle von den Restaurants gesprochen, aus denen sie gerade kamen und demnächst unbedingt hinwollen. Im Prince Charles fand im Januar die Burger & Hip Hop Party statt, der Laden platzte aus allen Nähten. Die Markthalle 9 in der Eisenbahnstraße ist das neue Berghain. Die vielen kleinen Fressinseln mit den herzlichen Menschen drauf sind Balsam für unsere unfreundlich bedienten Augenringe.

Parker Bowles, Berlin

As I stood  in the line for Parker Bowles on the weekends at 10:30 (!), everyone around me spoke of restaurants out of which they had just came and wanted to go to. In January the 'Burger and Hip Hop Party' was held in the 'Prince Charles'- the store was bursting at the seams. Markthalle 9 in Eisenbahnstraße is the new Berghain. The many small eaterys with the friendly people are a cure for our sore eyes (?). 

Kavita Goodstar, das Postergirl der Foodszene, ist Mitbegründerin des Street Food Thurdays und hat die Burgerparty im Prince Charles sowie andere Sachen veranstaltet. Ihren Konzepten rennt die halbe Stadt hungrig hinterher. Gerade hat sie für einen Monat „The Bar Market“ in der Cuvrystrasse eröffnet. Dort servieren Sommeliers, Brauer und Mixologen Freitag- und Samstagnacht Drinks. Und dort trifft man sie wieder: Die Berliner.

Markthalle 9, Berlin

Kavita Goodstar, the poster-girl of the food scene, is the co-founder of 'Streetfood Thursdays' and arranged the 'Burgerparty' in the Prince Charles as well as other things. Her concepts are making half the town hungry! Recently she opened 'The Bar Market' for a month on Cuvrystrasse. There, Sommeliers, Brauer and Friday/Saturday nights drinks are served- here you can meet again; (the true) Berlin. 

Der ehemalige Senatsreservenspeicher war in den letzten 9 Jahren Ausstellungsfläche und muss nun seine Tore für Luxuspläne schließen. Dass das scheiße ist, will ich gar nicht in Frage stellen. Im schummrigen Barlicht stehend, ein selbst gebrautes Bier trinkend hat man nicht das Gefühl, dass diese Stadt out ist. Berlin hat eher Hunger und Durst. Auf etwas Neues.

The late Senatsreservenspeicher has been a exhibition space for the last 9 years but must now close its doors for 'new luxury plans'. That this is nonsense- I don't question. Standing in the dim bar-light, drinking a home-brewed beer, you don't have the feeling that this town is out. Rather, Berlin has hunger and thirst for something new.
